Hip Hop Roots Hip Hop Roots, a group of young musicians from the Candeal area of Salvador do Bahia in Brazil, is a living experiment in percussion. The deep notes of the ‘surdo virado’ are the baseline of their unique musical creations. The ‘surdo virado’ is played in a very different way to the original ‘surdo’ that was played in a vertical position and barely touching the skin. When placed horizontally, the skin, the bilge, the bow and the sticks can all be used to make a more varied sound. What is particularly interesting in this sound is the way that one single piece of percussion can produce the deep notes so typical of the electronic drums, beat boxes and DJ mixes. The drum is back in the limelight. Apart from percussion instruments, the list of which is literally interminable, Hip Hop Roots is also made up of instruments of melody, harmony and electronic elements – violins, guitars, samplers and sound processors – that follow the percussion’s rhythm and create a full body of sound. The lyrics are carried on poetic, joyful hip hop, a message of peace. There is no aggressiveness, no act of rebellion, but rather a critical eye. These musicians have a mission - to use their music to make this a better world to live in. Their first album “Xangô”, released in 2008 on record label ‘Casa Limón’ has brought this exciting young group to the forefront of the musical scene in Salvador and beyond, with their unique encounter between traditional bahiana music, Felipe de Souza’s violin and acoustic hip hop.
